It is located on the banks of the Seine, close to the place where the Epte falls into the Seine, and half-way from Paris to Rouen. Vernon is adjacent to other communes like Bois-Jerome-Saint-Ouen, Giverny, Douains, Saint-Marcel, Pressagny-l’Orgueilleux and so on. Population of Vernon is about 26.5 thousand people (in conformity with the research of 2012). The toponym could mean «the plain covered with alders» or «the marshy plain». This city even has its own motto «Vernon simper viret» (Latin), which means «Vernon is always green». Also Vernon has a blazonry with three golden Royal lilies and three trees on it.
There are a lot of medieval buildings like «La maison du temps jadis» («The house of the foretime»), constructed in the middle of XV century, or «Le Vieux-Moulin» («The old mill»), built in XVI century. Also there are a lot of remarkable castles in this commune like the castle Bizy (1675) which is also called «The little Versailles», or Chateau des Tourelles (1196), or castle Brecourt (1625) which is placed between Vernon and another commune calls Douains. Furthermore there is an incredible temple called the Collegiate Notre-Dame de Vernon. It was constructed at the end of XI century in the gothic style. In 1893-1894 the impressionist painter Claude Monet created some pictures of this temple, for example like one called «Church of Vernon in fog».
Many notables persons are concerned with this town like famous actors Alain Delon and Catherine Deneve who nowadays live here, or Emir Kusturica who also has a house near the Vernon, or François-Frédéric Guy, pianiste, who was born there.
